“We’re Poor Too!” (Part 4 of 5)

The next day was the much anticipated trip into Mexico. We drove effortlessly across the boarder to Mexico. For us children it was the first time any of us had been beyond the boarder of the United States. Since we had just visited the Indian reservation, I think it wasn’t as big a shock as it could have been. Most of the streets were dirt. And the buildings were nothing more than wooden shacks. And this was the business district! I’m glad we didn’t see where people lived. Several years later on my mission to Brazil I’d see some parts of cities and they’d remind me of Juarez. We drove for a few blocks through the dusty streets until a man on a bicycle asked us to stop. He said he’d take us to a great shop. We followed him for a few more blocks and we came to his store. Several more men were standing there. They helped us get out of the car and made sure the doors were locked. Then they escorted us into the store. We looked around and none of us saw anything we wanted to buy. Dad had talked to us enthusiastically for weeks about bartering and how the Mexican people loved to do it. We bought a few trinkets. And then walked out.
