Mr. Crawford encouraged us from time to time to bring records into the band room for him to play for everyone. We were playing the beginning section of Thus Spake Zarathustra (the sunrise theme in the movie 2001.) This was the coolest science fiction movie ever until Star Wars came out the next year. So it was very significant that we were playing it. My parents had the record of the original orchestra version of it and I asked Mr. Crawford if I could bring the record in for us all to listen too. He agreed and I brought it to school. It only took a minute to play but it was good for us all to hear what we were shooting for. The timpani part on that song was very important. By this time I became, almost exclusively, the timpani player in our band. I was feeling like the drums weren't musical enough. Despite my Dad telling me how important the drums were to the overall effect of the band, I was starting to wish that I had taken a different instrument. This feeling was manifested a few years later by me taking up the string bass. But for ninth grade, I became primarily timpani player.
These drums needed to be tuned to the proper notes. In junior high we had a set of two. I used a pitch pipe to make sure the drum was tuned to the right note. I had to over come my shyness in playing the timpani. I had to play them very forcefully.
