For This Is Our Promised Valley (Part 5 of 7)

Another tradition in our home was each August, Dad would take a week off work and stay home with us children as Mom went to BYU Education Week. We had activities planned each day, hikes to Timpanogos Cave, tours of the Beehive House, going to the Church Office Building, and going to places where Dad ate lunch sometimes. Once he took us to a little restaurant that served fried egg sandwiches called Big Al’s. Of course our week’s activities almost always included attending Promised Valley.
The production was usually free to the public. However, one year they began charging one dollar per ticket, unless the people were tourists. Dad happened to mention this in passing one day to his father, who we were planning to take with us that evening to see Promised Valley. To this, Grandma Edra replied, jokingly, that we needed to wear Bermuda shorts and sun glasses so they would think we were tourists and give us free tickets.
The best place in the audience was to sit on the front rows of the theater. However, our most favorite place was to sit in the balcony, on the very back row. It was neat to see the movie projector come on at the beginning and the cricket scene. Promised Valley influenced us in many ways. We often found ourselves singing the song from Promised Valley many times. I remember Dad singing, “Alive, alive as a busy beehive,” just because he felt like it.
