In the spring of 1977, Mr. Crawford announced that our band had been invited to a music festival in Logan, Utah on the campus of Utah State University. Other excellent Junior High bands in and out of the state were also invited. A highlight of the trip would be the chance to be judged by the prestigious band leader, Dr. Dalby. We prepared for weeks for this event. Everything we did, Mr. Crawford said, "Now Dr. Dalby is going to comment on this," or "That is going to pull us down in Dr. Dalby's eyes." It got to the point where in our comments to each other we included Dr. Dalby's reaction to what we might do. Finally the morning arrived to board the bus with all of our instruments and equipment. We made the hour and a half drive to Utah State University. We were excited. We entered the music building of the university and were greeted by many other members of other bands and all their instruments and equipment. They seemed so much older and imposing. I should have known that we seemed the same way to them. We didn't get a chance to hear many of those bands, I guess that the organizers of the event figured Junior high students (as old and imposing as we were) could not sit still and be quiet for long enough. So about the only band we heard was ours. That's too bad because I think it would have been very good for us to have heard the other excellent bands.
We passed the time by touring the music building and the campus. We even had lunch at the student cafeteria. A group of my friends and I were naive enough to think that beautiful college coeds would come and sit by us, just because (we thought) we looked like hunks.
