Karen became an excellent seamstress. When she was a very little girl, she and some of my other sisters, pieced little scraps of white fabric together and sewed “bras” that went over their clothes. One summer, the young women at Church joined together with thousands more in the Salt Lake area to make banners. Each one was distinctive and original. Both Karen and Vera did a banner and got to march in a parade carrying it. We displayed them in our family room for a long time after that. On the day of the parade my Dad quoted the scriptures by saying, “Clear as the moon, fair as the sun, and terrible like an army with banners.”
