Very few juniors, in those days, were ever in the Cottonwood High Madrigals, the exclusive vocal ensemble consisting of twelve young men and twelve young women. And junior girls were more of a rarity than junior boys Karen was one of the first girls to be in madrigals as a junior. That year, Vera was also in Madrigals. Karen's senior year, I was able to be at their State of Utah madrigal competition. Their group got the distinctive “One Plus” rating which is the absolute best a group could get. It also meant that they were the best in the whole State of Utah. I remember seeing Karen leave the Harris Fine Arts Center at Brigham Young University right after they heard the news of the “One Plus” rating. Karen burst out the outside door, jumped off the top stair, threw her fist in the air in triumph as she went airborne, and shouted “Woooo-weeee!” She then landed at the base of the concrete steps with perfect balance – the whole time still wearing her long dress and high heels.
