Maybe it is because My Dad has passed away and we tend to memorialize things like this, but he is usually credited with a lot of the righteous things our family did. (Like scripture study in the morning.) But it was really my Mother who became the driving force to make this happen on a daily basis. In reality they did it together, but her consistency brought a sense of security into everything, and because of her, we children said to ourselves, "Yes, this is a good thing. I hope I do this with my family when I grow up."
Our family's scripture study began when I was about ten. We had always had family prayer, but then one day my Dad heard in Church that parents should read the scriptures to their children every day, even from birth. This was backed up by what leaders of the Church had said, and would later say. At first we read from the New Testament and those of us who could read, each had a copy of it to follow along in. There was one time that we were reading about the Apostle Paul and his journey to appeal to Rome. We were so excited to hear what happened next that we anticipated all day and all night the time that we would be able to read again and find out what happened. In later times we listened to the scriptures as we played a tape of a professional recording of someone reading the scriptures and we followed along. Still later we read directly from the Book of Mormon as we took turns reading out loud.
