Mom's Consistency (Part 5 of 7)

Each morning, without fail, Dad woke us up. For those who were extra sleepy, he carried
them to scriptures and prayers, and the rest of us children walked to the front room and sat on the
couch. We read the scriptures and when we were done with a chapter, we all knelt down and
Dad called on one person to offer the family prayer. After that we immediately went into the
kitchen and sat down to a breakfast that was ready and on the table. Mom had it ready there
even before we had arrived for scriptures and prayers.
Breakfast was usually very simple to prepare but we always enjoyed it. If Mom was in a real
rush, then, and only then, did we have cold cereal. In earlier years we had started out with
Wheaties and Cherrios as the only prepackaged cereals we could have. Dad said Wheaties were a luxury his parents could never afford in his house, so we considered ourselves lucky that we got Wheaties even though our friends ate sugar-coated cereals all the time. At times we also had puffed wheat and Shredded Wheat. A few times Dad brought home Captain Crunch cereal from work that had been passed out as a promotional item. But Captain Crunch was a rarity. Later we added corn flakes to the line-up of cold cereal we could have and we thought we were really extravagant then.
