I was amazed. The buildings and antennas that were once so impressive were dwarfed by the massive new tower. It was so large that you could see it distinctly from way down in the valley. You could even see the large crane that had been hauled to the top of the mountain while the tower was being built. Now, the old television tower looked like a tooth pick in comparison to the new tower. Dad explained that it was built to withstand hurricane-force winds. It was painted red and had some red flashing lights to warn aircraft to stay away. Its slanting legs met about half way up. It then formed a single tower as it rose to the sky. There were great white covers on this tower that shielded the important TV antennas from ice and snow. I suddenly had a wave of pride. My dad was going to tune that!
We got out of the Jeep and quickly shuffled into the building. It was so cold outside. The weather down in the valley was cold, of course, but up here at 9,000 feet it hadn't gotten above zero all day! And that was when the sun was shining. It was now the middle of the night.
