The next day we visited the Liberty Jail. The visitor center was built around a life-size replica of the jail. There were recorded sounds depicting the several months that Joseph Smith and others were confined there. Then, the last destination was Independence, Missouri. We visited the RLDS tabernacle and the LDS visitor center in this very significant city which played such an important role in the past and will do so in the future. I wandered up to a white church called The Church of the Temple Block. It was it’s own world-wide church. I talked to a very old man there.
The bus stopped at a little hamburger stand on the outskirts of Independence. Bishop Hunter wanted to buy everyone a root beer. An old man was chipping ice from the sides of a small freezer and pouring root beer from cans into little cups, to fill the bishop's request. It was kind of funny watching him, but I felt sorry for him having to serve such a big group. Then everyone boarded the bus for the long ride back to Utah. We drove across hot Kansas with the air conditioning broken. We stopped for breakfast the next day in Grand Junction, Colorado and arrived home later that day. It was Friday, June 6. The trip had lasted a week, but will live forever in the hearts and minds of those of us from the South Cottonwood Eleventh Ward.
