Fat Man’s Misery (Part 6 of 8)

By midnight, Salt and Pepper realized we weren’t going to make it to the truck as soon as he thought. We stopped to rest in a clearing at the top of a large hill. There was sand all around and a dead tree had fallen in the middle of it. Salt and Pepper lit the tree on fire and in no time it was a roaring blaze. “This is to scare mountain lions away,” he said. No one dared ask if he was joking, like he usually did, or if he was serious. He had become more serious after we didn’t run into the truck, so I was glad to have the fire. Salt and Pepper instructed us to each dig a little trench in the sand and this would act as our bed. We did so and prepared to lie down for the night. Earl had a large bag of cinnamon bears and we had that for dinner. I slept soundly in my sandy bed, but at probably around three o’clock, Salt and Pepper woke us up and got us on the move again. He wanted us to hike as much as possible in the cool of the night. With our limited water, he didn’t want us looking for the truck in the heat of the next day. I felt refreshed after my three hours of sleep. We left our make-shift camp and didn’t even bother to put out the fire. I figured Salt and Pepper did this to keep those mountain lions (pretended or real) far away. We hiked on for a few more hours and then we bedded down again in another clearing with sand and yet another fallen tree to light as a fire.
