I accidentally skipped this part a few days back. So here it is:
When I turned twelve, I started to attend Mutual which was the weekly activity night for the young men and women. We had a brief opening exercises in the chapel and then we separated into our different age groups and classes. I went with the boy scouts, ages twelve and thirteen years old. We were all dressed in our scout uniform. We would have rather been naked, before we ever would have thought of going to a scout meeting without wearing our uniform. Our new scout master, Earl Gubler, was my next door neighbor. He had just been called and put in place as the scout master two weeks before. The first thing he did as we assembled in the scout room was to say, "Two laps around the building!" At this, everyone jumped up and ran out the door. We had an outside door right next to us so no one ran in the Church building itself. We all came back after our run, huffing and puffing. We were too tired to goof off after that. We sat down and paid attention. Douglas Datwyler, my next door neighbor on the other side of me, was the senior patrol leader. He called us to order. He said that there was a paper route available if anyone was interested. He gave some other announcements and then turned it over to Earl. We divided up into patrols and planned what we would eat for our first over-night camp.
This camp was a few weeks later at a place about a hundred miles from us called the Sand Dunes. My Dad went with me on this camp. We had a great time. After that we had a monthly camp just about each month. It was to help us fulfill requirements for several merit badges, but also to increase interest and activity among the boys. The last thing a twelve year old boy wants to do is sit around in a meeting. He'd rather be out doing something. We were either out camping, preparing for a camp, or working on the requirements for merit badges or rank advancements. Very little time was spent sitting down on a chair in a scout meeting.
Our leaders were very faithful and took us on a monthly overnight camp. We went to places within a 100 mile radius of Salt Lake since we didn't want to spend all our time in the car driving. The hills south-west of Salt Lake, American Fork Canyon, Tracy Wig Wam, and some stake property only to name a few other wonderful places we went on these over night camps. Earl Gubler took us on these monthly camps as well as other adult leaders and fathers. Jack Robinson, the chairman of our scout committee took us on the week-long summer camp, again with fathers and other adult leaders.
